The Bauhütte 4.0 was founded with the vision to act as a catalyst for urban transformation processes and the scaling up of building with timber by making contributions towards the:

  • Reduction of CO2 emissions in the building sector through the use of biogenic materials.

  • Promoting an integrated value chain from forest to city supported through standardised data and AI to increase efficiency and speed of construction through serial, carbon neutral production.

  • Reduction of poverty and improvement of social justice in housing through faster, more efficient, and more sustainable construction.

  • Fostering the climate resilience of cities by using timber construction for vertical expansion and densification.

It achieves this through various activities including: acting as a platform for knowledge dissemination, events, networks and as a bridge between science and practitioners.

Cluster for urban innovative wood construction in times of climate crisis and emerging urban intelligence

Wood as a Material: Essence of Innovation

We believe in the transformative power of wood—beyond a building material, a vital force shaping future cities. Wood's renewability, carbon-sequestering ability, and versatility form the bedrock of our innovative urban wood construction approach.

Bauhütte 4.0 e.V. aims to reshape urban wood construction in response to the climate crisis and evolving urban intelligence. Founded in 2023 in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Systems and Design Technology (IPK), led by Prof. Dr.-Ing Holger Kohl and Emeritus Professor Raoul Bunschoten,  foundation president, and former head of CHORA conscious city at the Technical University of Berlin.

Executive Statement: Bauhütte 4.0

The Technical University of Berlin and the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Systems and Design Technology IPK are the initiators of the foundation of "Bauhütte 4.0" as a registered association for the promotion of urban construction with renewable raw materials. The association is to pursue two main core tasks:

Establishing a network in the capital region to promote a regional "forest to city" value chain

- Supporting cooperation between various stakeholders along the "forest to city" value chain

- Digitalisation of horizontal and vertical networking in planning, design and implementation processes.

Concept development for research, development and innovation

- Planning and implementation of Bauhütte 4.0 as a driver for research, development and innovation as well as for demonstrating construction principles and production systems based on prototypes

- Development of regional and national innovation networks for urban building with wood focusing on business, science and society

Bauhütte 4.0 in the urban timber construction value chain:

- Creation of economic efficiency effects and quality assurance through cooperative planning in timber construction (representatives from architecture, specialist planning, general contractors, construction companies, component production, project development, authorities, finance and forestry)

- Networking of small, digitally driven companies and regional timber construction companies

- Resolving the tension between individual design and standardised, collective planning through digital tools and processes

- Strategically linking increasing urbanisation with the forestry, wood, and timber industry into a cycle-orientated, sustainable value creation system between Berlin - Brandenburg

- Increasing the functionality and quality of timber construction elements as well as the traceability of the raw materials used throughout the entire building life cycle

- Development of transferable simulations and process-based prototypes

- Establish a hub for climate-friendly building and living in urban  space

Workshop Series: "Strengthening The Demand for Urban Timber Construction" as part of the grant from Built by Nature

Built by Nature (BbN) funded a grant for Bauhütte 4.0 collaborated with DiKieHo and CHORA Berlin, to convene the recent "Strengthening The Demand for Urban Timber Construction" workshop, which provided a series of interesting revelations and served as an important forum dedicated to accelerating the demand for timber in urban construction.

BbN’s mission is to accelerate the use of biobased materials in construction to support the built environment’s transition to net zero emissions by building connections among industry frontrunners and enabling innovation and investments; but also, by telling inspiring stories of ground-breaking nature-based projects and consolidating a common message for the movement.
